Welcome back to school! At our first meeting of the year, we discussed the benefits of joining ASME, specifically the student chapter here at UCSB. If you would like specific information, please contact an officer for details.

We also discussed potenital tour for this year. Last year we were very successful with tours on an oil rig, Edwards AFB, Speed the Roller Coaster, and the facilities at local Able Engineering. There was wide support for tours this year to include a Nano-tech facility, Northrop Grumman F/A 18 Assembly Line and Space Structures, north to Vandenberg AFB and the Space Launch Centers, Excile Cycles in North Hollywood, and of course a return trip to the ever popular Hoover Dam! Other tours suggested include the airport Tower and possibly a trip to the Mojave to visit Scaled Composites, winner of the Ansari X-Prize. Please make any suggestions for other sites we might want to visit.

We had a guest speaker from Teach For America. Visit http://www.teachforamerica.org for more info.

Lastly was fundraising. We will be serving coffee to the Grad students for the department and we will also be creating t-shirts. If you ould liek to submit a design, do so ASAP as they will be put into production shortly. If you want a visor, they are only $5!

If you could not make it to the meeting, or if your name is not on the email list, send Jeff a message and you will be added so you can keep up to date.

Welcome back to the Winter '04 quarter! Anyone interested in becomeing a member of the ASME, or anyone having difficulties signing up, contact any of the officers or Dr. Beltz for details. Remember, you can also signup online at www.asme.org.

We took signups for two of our upcoming tours - Able Engineering right here in Goleta, and Edwards AFB in the Mojave. Able engineering builds space structures and other composites. Over 2/3 of the employees happen to be UCSB grads. Those who signed up will be responsible for their own transportation. (It is located over behind Costco) The Edwards tour is tentatively set for Feb. 19, and will be limited to 15 people. Details to follow.

The Society of Women Engineers will be having an evening with industry on Thurs Jan. 22. Tickets are $15 sold in ENGRI. This is a great opportunity to meet with recruiters and build your resume.

Will Martinez from Engineers Without Borders spoke to us about his club, and extended an invitation for interested members to join. They meet Wednesdays at Noon in ENGRII 2319. For more information on what they do, or how to contact them, go to www.engr.ucsb.edu/~ewb-ucsb or www.ewb-usa.org

The FE test is on April 17. We will coordinate some review sessions for interested students, contact an officer for details.

Finally, thank you to all the parents who generously donated to our club. The fundraiser was a big success. Thank you again parents!

A tour to the only working steel mill in California is in the works but has been delayed due to the wildfires. More information to come soon. Other trips we are still considering include Able Engineering right here in Goleta and Reliant Energy in Oxnard. Again, if anyone has contacts of there own, or ideas for future trips, let one of the officers know.

The Santa Barbara county section of ASME is restructuring it's leadership to bring an active section to this area. There will be a "town hall" style meeting at Rusty's pizza downtown to kick it off. In true ASME fashion, free pizza and soda will be provided. Thur. Nov 6 from 6-8pm at Rusty's on Cabrillo.

Thursday Nov 13 brings the job fair to UCSB. This is a great opportunity to hand out resumes and speak to recruiters. Also, about 5:30 or 6:00, Northrop Grumman will come to speak (like the CevronTexaco thing).

Make sure to declare your candidacy for graduation on GOLD.

New pictures from the Platform Hogan trip have been posted.

The date for the PacOps Oil Platform tour has been set for the 15th. More people have signed up than we have allowable spots, so those who signed up will be contacted via email with more info.

Two sources of income: Monday Seminars and Letter Stuffing. Signups for each of these fundraising events. Mondays 3-4 people needed to set up/break down cookies and coffee for grad lecture series. Those who signed up for letter stuffing will receive an email with date & time.

Remember, it's never too late to sign up for membership. Apply online!
